ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in Portland, Oregon and raised in the Tualatin Valley. This scenic stretch of valley, with its rushing waterfalls and natures vibrant colors and textures became the inspiration for a lifetime of creating and depicting what she sees, what she feels, and what she breathes. A breath of peace, a sense of beaauty and a bit of heart to paint the story or the character - these are her passions.

Shirley has written several step by step oil and acrylic instruction books and teacher’s manuals. Working as an Administrative Assistant with Alexander Art for ten years, she demonstrated and taught classes in trade shows across the country, directed annual painting seminars, instructor conferences, and open houses featuring national television artists.

Painting with Oils and Acrylics Shirley has worked with a variety of subjects, winning ribbons and awards for her art work. Meticulously detailing what she sees has become her signature style...whether painting florals, animals, seascapes or children. As the years have gone by, she always had a lively interest in the work of others...often joining a workshop or a seminar by well-known artists who have shared their expressive techniques. 'I always learn something new.'

Most artists zero in on a specific subject for their art work... Shirley's journey began with the desire to paint the beautiful buterflies and flowers in her garden. On a trip to the beach she wanted to capture the kites in the wind, the sounds and movements of the waves, the sand, grassses and birds. Cats and dogs apperaed on her studio walls. Sifting through some childhood photos sparked a desire to paint memories of the Tualatin River where she played, fished and swam as a child. Friends traveling abroad sent photos of castles, grandchildren applauded as she painted portraits and memories for them, and her sons thought she should try wildlife. She has discovered there is no end to her journey...

She is currently teaching and painting in her studio in Springfield, Oregon. With her own easy paced teaching abilities, she offers personally supervised painting lessons with step by step instruction. ‘Creating a painting is a renewing experience, time stands still and you are able to let go of everything else.’

Shirley serves on the Board of Directors as the Immediate Past President of the Emerald Empire Art Association at the Emerald Art Center in downtown Springfield, Oregon. ‘As an artist I am always excited and grateful to those who promote the arts. It not only gives the artist an opportunity to tell his or her stories, but affords the viewer a powerful and uplifting experience.’
